All About That Bass

Meghan Trainor’s "All About that Bass" could very well be my favorite pop hit of the summer. Before I even watched enough of the video to learn what the song was about I was already enamored. I’m a sucker for pastels and a retro beat. Once I started listening to the lyrics I heard lines like “Yeah, it's pretty clear, I ain't no size two/But I can shake it, shake it/ Like I'm supposed to do” and “Every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top.” I soon realized this song is a body confidence anthem!

"I WROTE IT FOR ME...BECAUSE I’VE STRUGGLED WITH BODY IMAGE SINCE I WAS VERY YOUNG."

The video features a group of curvy girls strutting their stuff by showing off their dance talents in a pastel wonderland. Not only that but one of my favorite plus-size Vine celebrities, Sionemaraschino makes several appearances in the video showing off his amazing step dancing skills. 20-year-old Trainor’s video already has more than six and a half million views and with good reason. The video is super entertaining and the message is one young girls today deserve to hear. Trainor’s unfortunately commonplace experience with body image inspired her to write the song. In an interview for Billboard magazine Trainor explains why she wrote the song: “I wrote it for me…because I've struggled with [body image] since I was very young. And, my best friend is a beautiful goddess, but she'll pick on herself in the mirror. ‘My forehead's too big,’ or, ‘My shoulders go out too far ...’” Lucky for us she turned those negative thoughts into a positive message, one with an especially infectious beat and catchy chorus to boot!
