Curvy Girl February: Brandee Joyner

This month Curvy Couture recognizes Brandee Joyner as Curvy Girl February. Why is it so hard to love yourself? That is the question that Brandee J has been trying to help women of all ages, shapes, and sizes solve for the past half-decade. Brandee believes that to love yourself you must first accept yourself, and then understand that life is a constant process of improvement and growth, although she knows from personal experience that many times that is easier said than done. She understands because she has been there. When Brandee was just a teenager she realized that her body type was different than a lot of other girls. Even though she wanted to be the “ideal” image she saw on television and in the magazines, a size 0, she realized that her body was just not programmed to ever be that size. One thing Brandee had realized that loving yourself comes from within. At the age of 21 Brandee was married and a mother. She was facing more issues with how her body had changed and at this moment things took a turn for the worse when her then husband began to physically and verbally abuse her. She endured this pain for the next two years. She lived in fear and was not able to be herself. Overcoming this hard time in her life was not easy especially with her father being in prison at the time.

KURVY LIFE - WOMEN WHO EMBRACE THEIR SIZE AND FOCUS ON BEING THE HEALTHIEST VERSIONS OF THEMSELVES

Once again, Brandee had to learn to rebuild herself. Over the years it took a lot of soul searching, help from friends, prayer and therapy to help rebuild her soul and character. During this journey she knew it was her calling to help women of all ages to build themselves again no matter what they had been through in life. In 2010 everything came to a head when she finally got so fed up with the lack of options, support, and resources for women of different body types that she decided to start a business to reach out and help. It is from this frustration that her first business, “Phoenicia Goddess Boutique” was born. Phoenicia Goddess represented the fact that no matter how bad things got, any woman could rise up from the ashes and become the goddess that they were meant to be. Again Brandee was happy and successful but she knew that she wanted to do more and reach more people. She wanted to help people rebrand their lives. To do this first she knew she had to rebrand the plus-size community and she decided to coin the term “Kurvy” and launch her second business The Kurvy Life. The Kurvy Life is a lifestyle brand designed and focused on enhancing the lives of “kurvy” women. Before she knew it the Kurvy Life had taken off and created a community of women who embrace their size while focusing on being the healthiest versions of themselves. As Brandee’s company continued to grow she also began to get personal offers to perform workshops, host events, and model for other brands. Today Brandee continues to run her business as well as reaching out to anyone who needs her help in the form of an author, speaker, and personal coach. In 2014, Brandee J co-wrote with her husband, The Kurvy Guide to Unshakeable Confidence. Brandee J has continued to grow her brand and branch out to be an advocate for women. She continues to develop her brand by writing more books, modeling, and motivational speaking along with designing her swimsuit line S. Jane. She is a force to be reckoned with.
